Definition and Usage

An element's padding-inline is the space from its border to its content in the inline direction, and it is a shorthand property for the following properties:

Values for the padding-inline property can be set in different ways:

If the padding-inline property has two values:

  • padding-inline: 10px 50px;
    • padding at start is 10px
    • padding at end is 50px

If the padding-inline property has one value:

  • padding-inline: 10px;
    • padding at start and end is 10px

The CSS padding-inline and padding-block properties are very similar to CSS properties padding-top, padding-bottom, padding-left and padding-right, but the padding-inline and padding-block properties are dependent on inline and block directions.

Note: The related CSS properties writing-mode and direction define inline direction. This affects where the start and end of an element is in the inline direction and the result of the padding-inline property. For pages in English, block direction is downward and inline direction is left to right.

More Examples

Example

With the writing-mode property value of a <div> element set to vertical-rl, the inline direction is downwards. The result is that the start of the element is moved from left side to top, and the end of the element is moved from right side to bottom:

div {
  writing-mode: vertical-rl;
  padding-inline: 10px 100px;
}
